Dichroic Glass Designs

Dichroic Glass - Dichroic means two colors - 'di' meaning two and 'chroic' from chrome or color.  Dichroic Glass appears to be one color when light shines through it and another color when light reflects off of it.  This glass is made in a high temperature vacuum chamber where a spinning piece of glass is coated with thin layers of vaporized oxides such as titanium, silicon, or magnesium.  The number of oxide coats dictates the price of the finished product.  The process is actually a spin -off of space age technology.

The glass is hand selected to present the best color and clarity for each piece of jewelry created.  Because each piece is hand made, there will be variations in size and color.  The glass is heated to approximately 1500 degrees Fahrenheit, where different characteristics and refractive qualities will be determined.  The glass is then cooled slowly to avoid thermal shock.  Thermal shock will cause the pieces to crack or shatter.
